Measuring Ring Size

Published: July 25, 2006

Finding your ring size may seem like a simple task, but many people don't know theirs. Those who have trouble finding ring sizes that fit their fingers often end up wearing ones that are either too big or too tight. Jewelry stores may also sometimes be at fault f because some commonly sell rings between 1-11/2 sizes too large so as to avoid adjusting them to specifically fit their customers.

There are three different finger types that help determine what ring size is best for you:

The typical finger is one where the knuckle joint is slightly larger than the fleshy part below it where the ring is worn. These people have the easiest time determining their ring size. An appropriate fit would slide tightly over the knuckle but feel comfortable once in place.

A well-built finger is one where the fleshy part is larger than the knuckle joint. These people may have difficulty finding their appropriate size because a ring may fit easily over the knuckle but is still loose on the finger once in place. Without the security of the knuckle to hold the ring in place, it will slip completely off the finger if it becomes too loose. Most jewelers recommend that people with this finger type wear a ring that is slightly too small rather than one that fits perfectly to ensure that it won't fall off.

Slim fingers have a much larger knuckle joint than their fleshy part below it. This allows a ring to slide up and down the portion of the finger below the knuckle and spin around. To remedy this problem, many jewelers add bars on the inside back of a ring to hold it in place.

How to measure your ring size:

1. Wrap a piece of string or paper around the base of your finger.
2. Mark the string or paper where it overlaps and makes a complete circle around your finger.
3. Measure the length of the overlapping section of string or paper.
4. Compare your measurement with a standard ring sizing chart to determine your ring size.

Ring sizes can be easily converted from U.S. Classifications to Britain, Europe, or Japan sizing with a simple chart. Although many countries have their own individual means for differentiating ring sizes, Britain is the only country that uses letters.
